Transistors - Bipolar (BJT) - Arrays
The ULN2004AIDR is a high-performance, low-voltage, 8-channel Darlington transistor array integrated circuit. It contains 8 NPN Darlington pairs that feature high-current gain and minimum saturation voltage. It is designed to be used as a general purpose driver in telecommunications, power drive control, automotive electronics and other high-end applications requiring high current driving and/or sensitivity.
The Darlington pair inside the ULN2004AIDR consists of two transistors connected back-to-back which results in high current gain and low saturation voltage. A typical Darlington can have a gain of 1000 or higher. Additionally, the ULN2004AIDR provides an integrated flyback diode to protect the driving transistor from high-voltage or negative voltage transients while switching.
The ULN2004AIDR is commonly used in power converters, audio-video equipment, motor control circuits, automotive electronics, robotics control applications, lamp drivers and in other similar applications requiring high-current drive. Its wide operating range of 4-60V and its ability to switch both AC and DC loads make it an ideal choice for many applications. The ULN2004AIDR is also widely used in microcontroller based applications where it functions as an interface to sensors, motors, relays and other peripherals.
The ULN2004AIDR can be configured in both low-side and high-side switch mode applications. In low-side switch mode applications, it is connected on the ground side of the load, whereas in high-side switch mode applications it is connected on the supply side of the load. The ULN2004AIDR is usually biased with a supply voltage ranging from 4V to 60V and can deliver up to 500mA of continuous current.
The ULN2004AIDR is usually operated in its linear mode meaning it is used to drive a single load at a time. Possible load configurations include LED arrays, relays, motors, and other high-power electronics. The ULN2004AIDR can also be configured to drive multiple loads simultaneously using its logic-level logic pass-through feature, making it an ideal choice for multiple load control applications such as power distribution control circuits.
The ULN2004AIDR provides a high-voltage protection feature to protect the integrated transistors from overvoltage transients while switching. The protection feature is usually enabled and disabled by external logic control signals. Another feature of the ULN2004AIDR is its overtemperature protection which prevents the integrated transistors from overheating and ensures longer lifetime of the integrated circuit. The ULN2004AIDR can be used in both through-hole and surface-mount applications.
The ULN2004AIDR is an ideal choice for high-current and high-power applications and is an important part of many industrial and consumer electronics systems. Its cost effectiveness, high-reliability and wide operating range make it a popular choice for a variety of applications.
