Aluminum electrolytic capacitors, or electrolytic capacitors, are a type of capacitor that utilizes an aluminum foil substrate, electrolyte, and, in some cases, a non-conductive liquid. As with all capacitors, electrolytic capacitors store electric charge; they are used in a variety of applications, such as filtering, voltage regulation, bypass, signal filtering, and more. The UPM2D2R2MPD (2-Dimensional Multi-layer Polarity Detector) application field and working principle is a special-typed aluminum electrolytic capacitor that has the unique property of being able to detect the direction of current flow.

On the front side of the UPM2D2R2MPD is a thin metal film formed of anodic oxide. On the back side is a dielectric layer that is composed of polyester, glass foil and epoxy. In addition to its two main layers, the UPM2D2R2MPD also has multiple layers of aluminum interspersed between the two main layers, which add to its strength and durability.
