The MAX5033BUSA is a step-down DC-DC switching regulator which provides a highly integrated power conversion solution intended for use in communications, consumer, industrial and automotive applications that have stringent efficiency and small solution size requirements. This device integrates all the necessary blocks to generate a regulated voltage output at a current level up to 1.4 A. This regulator is part of Texas Instruments\' Tiny Controller portfolio, claimed to be the industry\'s smallest step-down switch mode regulators with integrated short-circuit protection and programmable soft-start feature.
The MAX5033BUSA is the tiny, efficient regulator solution with an external MOSFET, to minimize footprint and component count of power supply solutions. It operates in Burst Mode operation to reduce quiescent current at light load, and offers high efficiency over a wide input voltage range. Despite its tiny size, it shows excellent line and load regulation, no load current and fast transient response.
Working Principle of MAX5033BUSA
The MAX5033BUSA integrates a P-channel high-side MOSFET with 10 A peak output current capability, a current-mode PWM buck regulator, a high-frequency oscillator, a low-resistance on-shore power switch and a wide range of features for efficient system control. The switching regulator consists of four major functional blocks, namely an input voltage regulation, an internal clock source, a high-side power switch, and a current mode loop controller.
The MAX5033BUSA starts in Burst Mode operation. The internal clock starts counting up after an internal timeout. Once the counter reaches the programmed off-time, it times out and the device enters PWM mode, providing a regulated output voltage. During the on-time, the device switches on the MOSFET and the inductor supplies current to the output capacitor. The feedback voltage adjusts the off-time such that the average inductor current remains constant. At the end of the off-time, the MOSFET will be turned off and the inductor current is discharged into output capacitor through the catch diode.
The MAX5033BUSA also features other built-in functions, like over-current protection and short-circuit protection. The on-chip compensation maintains the stability in the power supply loop. The controller includes a control input current limit adjustment to protect external MOSFETs against sudden current surge or load transients. The internal soft-start circuit gradually ramps up the output voltage over a preset period of time. This helps to avoid high inrush currents during power-up.
Application of MAX5033BUSA
The MAX5033BUSA is ideal for high-efficiency, low output current and low-noise applications. It is suitable for various communications, consumer, industrial and automotive devices, such as cellular phones and PDAs, notebook, desktop and server expansion cards, netbook, game consoles and controllers, GPS’s and digital photo frames. It also applies to multiple power conversion requirements in automotive, communications and industrial systems, from 12V to 3.3V. It is also offered in a 20-pin chip-scale package (UCSP), making it the smallest buck regulator with short-circuit protection, over-current protection and programmable soft-start.
