The MAX5901NNEUT+T is a Hot Swap Controller that provides system protection in the event of power-up or short-circuit conditions. The device is manly used in applications such as servers, storage systems, high-end routers, multiswitches and VoIPp. It adds system-level protection toHot Swap systems, allowing for safe, intelligent insertion and removal of high-power boards.

The device also features a hot swap controller with a low-on-resistance P-channel MOSFET switch that can control up to 20A of current. The MAX5901NNEUT+T hot swap controller not only features a low propagation delay time, but also provides adjustable deadtime to meet the requirements of different system loads. Also, the device has in-system programmable decoupling capacitor threshold levels and fault controllers.

The MAX5901NNEUT+T is designed with a high monitoring capability. In system-level applications where an external supervisory circuit may not be available, the Hot Swap controller’s onboard monitoring is able to detect supply voltage transients or power-up transients up to 37.5V. By carefully monitoring the input voltage and monitoring the load voltage, it can also detect cases, such as ground bounces, current unbalance and overvoltage conditions.

In terms of protection, the device offers slew rate limiting, undervoltage lockout, overvoltage, short-circuit, inrush limiting and over-temperature protection. It also has an adjustable trip time delay setting that allows the designer to modify the time delay from 0µs to 8µs, depending on the application needs. Also to facilitate system-level fault protection, the device features an open circuit protection that allows for maximum protection upon fault detection as well as safe removal of the power source.

The MAX5901NNEUT+T hot swap controller is part of Maxim Integrated’s Hot Swap Controllers family, designed with a number of intelligent features to provide power and system protection. It not only provides system-level protection, but also reduces board-level cost and system-level latency to enable safe, intelligent insertion and removal of high-power boards.
