MAX5902ACEUT+T Application Field and Working Principle.The MAX5902ACEUT+T is part of Maxim Integrated\'s Series of Hot Swap Controllers. It is a voltage regulator specifically designed for hot swap applications: allowing boards to be connected to and disconnected from the main power supply without interrupting power. It has big current (up to 25A) and low current (as low as 1mA loads) switching capabilities.The MAX5902ACEUT+T features a low on-resistance P-channel MOSFET driver with a typical resistance of 0.29Ω at its output along with a current sense circuit enabling circuit protection. It is available in an 8-pin TDFN package, making it easy to implement in a variety of space-limited designs.The MAX5902ACEUT+T is designed to be used in a specific application field including powering up, powering down, testing and instrumentation. Its working principle is based on the control circuitry that provides the necessary output voltage and current control and limiting.The MAX5902ACEUT+T integrates a slew-rate controller and soft start to prevent large inrush current during startup, based on an internal reference. By using an external resistor, the steering logic circuitry can be adjusted for faster or slower slew rates.When operating, the internal reference circuit compares the current output voltage to the desired output voltage (Vout). If the output voltage is lower than required, the output voltage is increased until it reaches the desired level. Inversely, if the output voltage is higher than required, the output voltage starts to decrease until the desired level is reached.In order to prevent over-current or short circuit conditions if Vout is set too low, the MAX5902ACEUT+T will throttle the current and limit the peak current to 1.25A. This threshold can be adjusted down to 0.20A by setting the current sense range (CSR) pin.The protection circuitry implemented within the MAX5902ACEUT+T provides input over-voltage protection (OVP), over-demand protection (ODP) and in the worst cases, output short-circuit protection. During start-up, a slowly ramping voltage sets the output voltage and limits the inrush current from the power source; this is implemented using the soft start pin, which allows adjustment of the voltage ramping rate.The MAX5902ACEUT+T also integrates a power path, allowing for clean disconnection of the load without disturbing the output voltage as well as selective powering, where one output have low power and goes to sleep when not in use and the other has higher power to enable higher current draw applications.Furthermore, the device integrates additional features like enable control and power-good indicator. The enable control pin allows the user to enable/disable the device in case of a fault, while the power-good indicator pin is an open-drain output going low when the output is within the set limits and goes high in case of an over-voltage, over-demand, or short-circuit condition. This can then be monitored to ensure the system is operating within preset tolerances.The MAX5902ACEUT+T is a versatile solution to provide hot swap control, where its voltage regulation, current limiting and protection features make it the ideal device to control power switching in high power-density systems. This device is widely used in military and aerospace applications, avionics, industrial and medical systems, as well as in communication infrastructure.
