Forward voltage - low current operation

Under the forward voltage condition, the voltage applied across the diode should be higher than the breakdown voltage to have the diode conduct. In this case, the current will be low. As the voltage rises, so does the current.

Reverse voltage - high current block operation

In the reverse voltage condition, the anode voltage should be higher than the breakdown voltage and the cathode voltage should be lower than the breakdown voltage. The diode will block all current. Therefore, it works as the protection circuit or devices.
