Working Principle of 1N4004GP-TP

The working principle of 1N4004GP-TP diode is based on the “P-N junction”. The P-N junction consists of a positive and a negative side, and when a P-N junction is created by combining two materials with different dopants, it forms an electronic barrier in the junction. When a forward bias is applied, the barrier potential is reduced and free electrons in the n-type material cross the junction and enter the p-type material. As result, the diode turns on and a current will flow through it. When the forward bias is removed, the diode turns off and current stops flowing. In the reverse bias condition, the barrier potential is increased and current flow is blocked. This is called reverse breakdown or avalanche breakdown, which occurs when the reverse bias voltage is exceeding (usually 5 times higher) the rated breakdown voltage.
