1N4099 is a type of Zener diode, characterized by its high output current and low leakage current. It is a single diode, meaning it consists of only one junction instead of two or more in a multiple diode. Its main application is voltage regulation, in which it controls the output voltage of a circuit by providing a constant, steady voltage regardless of changes in the input voltage.

Zener diodes are constructed with the same P-N junction as an ordinary diode but with an added layer of heavily doped P-type material next to the N-type material.
