1N4679 BK is a Zener Diode, which is a type of diode that functions differently from other general purpose diodes. It does not allow current to flow in the opposite direction, but establishes a volt-amperes relation for current passing in one direction. The voltage across the diode is maintained at a constant value when the given reverse voltage is constant. This is often referred to as breakdown voltage or Zener voltage become it can be measured precisely. Zener diodes are widely used for the regulation of power supplies, voltage reference and replacement of the traditional voltage regulator circuits in industry.Working Principle
1N4679 BK Zener diodes work with the same principle as general purpose diodes. A general purpose diode is commonly called as a rectifier diode, which is made up of two layers of semiconductor material. The two layers are the anode and cathode, with the anode being more negatively charged than the cathode. A Zener Diode is thus the same as a regular diode however with the addition of a small pinch of impurities, boron, or indium, which is included in the semiconductor material to give it breakdown or avalanche properties.When the external voltage applied on a regular diode is less than the voltage burden, current will only able to flow in one direction. However, when voltage applied on a Zener diode is greater than the breakdown voltage, current will flow in the reverse direction. In this state, Zener diodes can keep a constant voltage, regardless of the amount of the current passing through it.Application Field
