1N4938-1, Rectifiers and Single Diodes Application Field and Working PrincipleModern day electronics and electrical equipment generally require an efficient and reliable power supply. Rectifiers and single diodes are very commonly used to achieve this. In particular, the 1N4938-1 model of rectifier is known for its high performance and is widely used in various industrial, military and commercial applications. A rectifier is an electronic component, usually a diode, that converts alternating current (AC) to direct current (DC). This is due to their structure − they consist of two layers of silicon, one P-type and one N-type, which form a PN junction. When a positive voltage is applied to the anode (+) of the diode, current flows through the diode and is collected at the cathode (−). Since the voltage applied is greater than the built-in junction potential, the diode is referred to as “forward biased” and current will flow. Conversely, if the voltage is reversed, the diode is said to be “reverse biased” and the current will be blocked. In addition to its ability to block current in the reverse direction, a single diode also has a certain amount of forward resistance. When a forward voltage is applied, electrons start to fill the ‘holes’ in the PN junction and this phenomenon is known as minority carrier injection. As the electrons fill these holes, the energy required to inject more electrons increases. This is known as the “built-in” voltage and it is this voltage that causes the significant forward resistance in a single diode. The 1N4938-1 diode has a number of characteristics which make it suited to a variety of applications. Firstly, its forward voltage drop is very low (< 0.5V) and its surge current capability is high (1.2A) making it an ideal choice for current limiting circuits. In addition, its reverse leakage current is also very low (less than 10mA). This ensures that the diode’s capability is not hindered by excessive current flowing in either direction.
