Shielding materials are the most commonly used protection. These materials, like aluminum foil or metal mesh, create a physical barrier that blocks the radiation from entering a certain area. It is however very important to ensure that the shield is effective and of the right material. A shield with improper material or wrong size can let in the radiation and do more harm than good.The other protective measure is the use of Absorbing materials such as conductive foams, absorptive pads, and ground planes. These materials absorb the radio frequencies instead of blocking them like the shielding materials. By doing this, the radiation is dispersed or absorbed, hence reducing the danger it poses. It should be noted however that they are not meant to be used in place of a shield. They should only be used to supplement the shielding measures.Finally, we must understand the working principle of these protection materials. In case of shielding, the shielding materials force the radiation to take a longer path and therefore reduce its intensity when it reaches the protected area. In the case of Absorbing materials, the radiation is converted into heat energy which is released into the atmosphere.RFI and EMI protection is an important field and is constantly being improved upon in order to provide better protection. With the ever growing need for more and better protection against EM radiation, the use of shielding and absorbing materials has become increasingly important. Though they are not a perfect solution, they can be used to ensure that our sensitive equipment is shielded from the potentially harmful effects of EM radiation.
