The 2N2324U4 is a silicon-controlled rectifier (SCR) designed to support a wide range of applications.

Application field

The SCR is used in a variety of industrial, commercial and domestic applications, including controlling electric motors, thermocouples for temperature control, light dimmers for controlling incandescent lights and ovens, control relays for industrial applications, and even solar-powered home systems.

The 2N2324U4 SCR is also used in pulse-width modulation (PWM) and current-sensing circuits for variable-speed AC drives, uninterruptible power supply (UPS) circuits, as well as in telecommunications and electrostatic discharge (ESD) protection.

Working principle

The 2N2324U4 is a three-terminal, voltage-controlled semiconductor device, where the Anode, Cathode and Gate terminals constitute the three primary terminals. When a positive voltage is applied to the gate terminal, it creates a reverse bias gate current which, in turn, causes the device to become conductive between the Anode and Cathode terminals.

The SCR features four operational modes, namely Forward- or Reverse-Blocking, Forward On-Off, Reverse On-Off and Constant-Current modes. In the Forward Blocking mode, no current flows through the device regardless of the polarity of the Anode and Gate potentials. In the Reverse Blocking mode, the SCR conducts in the reverse direction, when the voltage between the Anode and Gate terminals is negative.

In the On-Off modes, the current flowing through the SCR can be switched on and off by a gate current, while in the Constant-Current mode the device is designed to maintain a constant current. In the Constant-Current mode, the gate current is adjusted so that the device maintains the desired current.

The 2N2324U4 is rated for an Anode voltage of 1.2V and a maximum reverse voltage of 0.8V, with a maximum current handling capacity of 800A. The device is housed in an 8-pin DIP package and is suitable for surface and DIP socket mounting.
