Transistors - JFETs
The 2N4856 is a junction field-effect transistor (JFET) which is widely used in analog circuits due to its low noise and simple operating characteristics. Generally, a JFET can amplify signals over a wide range of frequencies and with very low distortion while being able to operate at high temperatures. The 2N4856 has a gate-drain junction; the gate-source junction is not present on the device. The 2N4856 is a depletion-mode JFET, which means that by default, it is completely “on” and the current flowing through it is at a maximum. The JFET’s conductivity is decreased by applying a voltage to the gate, making it an ideal way to control the current, voltage or power in an analog circuit. As such, the 2N4856 is commonly used as a low-noise transistor switch, and it is usually found in applications such as power control, amplifier circuits, and audio and headphone amplifiers.The 2N4856 JFET’s working principle is fairly straightforward. Essentially, when a positive or negative voltage is applied to the gate terminal, it produces a depletion layer in the channel, which blocks the current.
