Working Principle
The AD9578BCPZ operates on a phase-locked loop (PLL) which can be configured to generate a variety of clock frequencies. It consists of an input frequency divider, an on-chip Voltage Controlled Oscillator (VCO), a comparison mechanism, an output frequency divider and an output buffer. It works by dividing an input frequency like an external crystal, or an externally generated clock, and comparing it to the internal VCO signal. If the two signals are not locked, the difference is used to adjust the VCO frequency, and thus the output frequency, until the two signals are very close to each other, at which point the loop is said to have "locked". It then continues in a cycle, comparing the input frequency signal to the output signal, and using the difference to adjust the output frequency as long as it is close to the desired output frequency.
The AD9578BCPZ can be programmed so that it can generate any frequency from almost any input clock source. It can generate from one to eight output clock signals and each output signal can be configured with its own output divider and post divider.
