Direct Digital Synthesis (DDS) is a method for creating digitally generated analog signals. DDS is a wide-band technique that enables frequency agile synthesis and modulation with high spectral purity for applications in communication fields such as television broadcast, cellular base stations, and digital audio broadcasting, Using DDS allows arbitrary frequency and phase modulation including frequency hopping. The highly versatile AD9831ASTZ device is a single chip direct digital synthesizer capable of creating stable analog signals in this manner.
The AD9831ASTZ comes in a 56-lead LFCSP and is designed to work with a supply voltage of 1.8 or 2.5 V. It provides a full 6-bit resolution, user-programmable output frequency up to 40 MHz, and can achieve a sinusoidal output frequency accuracy of ±1 Hz at its lowest setting of 1 Hz. It also offers a power-down mode, fine and course tuning modes, low power shutdown bit and a programmable high-frequency clock output with selectable line lengths.
The AD9831ASTZ is highly suited for applications in microwave communication systems. Since DDS technology provides high-speed, low-distortion, and wide-bandwidth frequency modulation, it can be used to build microwave frequency sources for many applications. Examples include cellular base stations, digital audio broadcasting, and WLAN and other types of communication systems. The AD9831ASTZ device achieves the direct digital synthesis through the use of a frequency-dependent digital-to-analog converter (DAC). The number of bits in the frequency register determines the frequency resolution of the output.
The device also has a programmable output amplitude greater than ±1 dB from DC to 30 MHz. The amplitude of the signal is determined by the amplitude register which is a programmable setting that allows for both fine and coarse gain adjustment. Furthermore, the device has a programmable clock output that is used to provide an alternative reference frequency to the input clock. This alternative reference frequency makes it possible to synthesize signals at frequencies that are not directly related to the input clock.
