Direct digital synthesis (DDS) is a technique for generating a wide range of digital waveforms in a predictable, repeatable and accurate manner. The AD9850BRS belongs to this type of modern signal sources and is able to generate highly precise and stable clock signals as output. It is designed to convert digital binary words into analog waveforms. This device is ideal for use in applications such as clock and frequency synthesis, frequency and phase modulation, sweeps and chirps, signal excitation, pulse and pattern generation, and development of communication systems.
The AD9850BRS has a 40-bit register for programming of the output frequency. It consists of 1kHz steps in the lower 30 bits (called the Tuning Word) and 9kHz steps for the higher 10 bits. It thus provides frequency resolution of .0976 Hz and operating frequency range of 0.0976Hz to 40MHz. The external reference clock frequency is from 3kHz to 40MHz, with an accurate clock output signal of up to 44.5MHz, and 0.5Hz to 4GHz output frequency range. The device maintains a minimum phase noise of -90dBc/Hz up to 10kHz offset. It has an output signal amplitude of 3.3 Vpp (typical), with a 6-Bit control of 0.66 to 3.3V peak to peak.
The AD9850BRS has uers of FS (Fast settling) and PS (Phase settling) modes of operation. The FS mode is used when there is a rapid switching of frequencies or signaling requirements, or when very fast settling times are required. The PS mode is used when tight phase control is required or when maintain response at higher frequencies is necessary. The device internally amplifies the output signal with a gain of up to 20, when necessary for fast signal acquisition or for longer contution period. The device also has an internal temperature compensator.
The AD9850BRS contains an internal phase accumulator, which is used to generate the desired output frequency. The accumulator has an on-chip clock generator with programmable frequency reference for programming the output frequency. The input data is stored in the device\'s programmable internal registers which are then used to calculate the desired frequency. The internal registers can be programmed using the 8-bit serial interface.
