AD9851BRS is used in a variety of applications, such as telecommunications, radar, navigation and terahertz radiation. In telecommunications, AD9851BRS serves as a radio frequency synthesizer for producing radio frequency signals for various services, such as voice, data, and video. The device also functions as a local oscillator in communications systems, most notably in the Global Positioning System (GPS). In radar systems, the device is used to generate wide band, self-modulated signals, with very low noise and distortion levels.
In navigation systems, the direct digital synthesis device is employed to develop navigation sonars and other navigational instruments. In terahertz radiation applications, it is used over conventional frequency mixing techniques to generate signals with frequencies ranging from 0.1THz to 10THz.
The AD9851BRS contains two multipliers, an adder, a phase accumulator, a calibration circuit, a frequency tuning word register and a Phase offset register. The operation of the direct digital synthesis is based on two main operations: sum of sine waveforms operation and phase accumulator operation. In the sum of sine waveform operation, the device generates frequency synthesizer tuned output signals by performing an addition operation on the stored sine waveform coefficients. The phase accumulator operation is performed in order to generate the desired frequency components of the output signals.
The frequency tuning word register stores the tuning word, which is used in the sum of sine waveform operation. The phase modulation is done using the phase offset register, which contains the phase offset levels that determine the modulation of the output signal.
The calibration circuit is used to properly match the frequency tuning words to the desired frequency. The calibration circuit can adjust the frequency of the output signal within a certain range by varying the amplitude of the signal.
