IGBTs are a type of popular power semiconductor devices which have both the features of a transistor and a diode. The process where IGBTs work is by introducing an extra layer of insulation between the gate and the emitter of the device. When voltage is applied, current flows from the emitter towards the collector via the gate. The electrons that pass through the gate create a magnetic field which opposes the applied voltage. This causes the electrons to \'push\' back, reducing the voltage applied. When the gate is switched off, current stops flowing.
The IGBT also has a low forward voltage drop across the collector and emitter. This makes it very efficient in power supply circuits due to the low voltage drop when conducting. In addition, the APT50GT120B2RG is capable of high dV/dt capability which protects the device under severe condition. This helps to ensure stable operation of the device in extreme conditions.
