PMIC (Power Management Integrated Circuit) Voltage Regulators Linear BA17812T Application Field and Working Principle
PMICs are integrated circuits (ICs) that manage the power needs of a system, either by converting one form of electrical energy to another or by supplying the electrical power directly to a system. One form of PMIC is the Voltage Regulator. Voltage regulators provide an output voltage that is regulated regardless of electrical current or load conditions within a certain range. Although a variety of voltage regulator designs are available, the three common designs are switching regulators, linear regulators, and integrated LDOs. The BA17812T linearvoltage regulator is one of the most popular linear regulator ICs belonging to the BA78xx Series from Rohm Semiconductor. This article will discuss the application field and working principles of this IC.
The BA78xx Series linear voltage regulators have a variety of application areas, including portable battery-powered equipment, power supplies for logic circuits, and various power regulators for personal communication, automotive equipment, industrial and medical applications. The BA17812T is designed to process inputs from the IC battery supply, the internal clock oscillator, or from an external voltage supply. It is also designed to provide a wide range of input voltage, from 0.8V to 6V, with an output voltage range of 1.2V to 6V. In addition, it has a high-efficiency step-down regulator and can provide overload protection. It is also capable of providing input and output ripple reduction as well as a diode clamped output.
The BA17812T linear regulator functions by comparing the measured voltage at its output to that of approximately 1.25V reference voltage, within the regulator\'s Error Amplifier (EA). The deviation between the measured voltageand the reference voltage is thenused to control a PNP or PMOS differential amplifier, which is also known as the Transistor (TR). The Base current of the TR is controlled by the EA and thus, the Output Voltage of the IC is kept at a constant, regulated value.
The output voltage of this linear voltage regulator can be adjusted using the externally applied Varistor Voltage (VV). The voltage at the regulator’s output is determined by the VV and the IC’s internal reference voltage. Hence, the output voltage is adjusted by applying a suitable VV and connecting it to the Varistor pin of the IC.
The BA17812T linear voltage regulator also has in-built thermal protection circuitry which increases the input voltage when the IC temperature rises above 105°C. This thermal protection circuitry puts the IC into a thermal shutdown state, drawing less current and thus, reducing power dissipation. Furthermore, the IC has short circuit protection (SCP) and deburnout protection (DPO) features that are used to protect the TRs of the IC by cutting them off when SCPs or DPOs occur. In addition, the IC features a high output capability of 3A and an internal heat sink that reduces power dissipation.
Finally, the BA17812T provides a wide operating temperature range from -40°C to +85°C, allowing it to be used in applications that require robust, reliable performance. It also has high-accuracy voltage and current regulation at variable output voltages, making it suitable for various applications.
