Working Principle

The BZT52-B16X is a Zener diode, which has two distinct states, one in which it acts as a conventional diode, and one in which it exhibits a reverse-biased Zener effect. In its diode state, the diode allows current to flow in a single direction, blocking any reverse current. When reverse-biased to a certain voltage, it becomes capacitive and exhibits a Zener effect, reducing the reverse voltage and allowing current to flow both ways.

The Zener breakdown voltage is determined by the doping and width of the depletion region of the diode. As the reverse voltage increases, the depletion region grows and eventually reaches a breakdown point where the Zener voltage is reached. At this point, the diode switches from a diode state to a Zener state, allowing current to flow in both directions.

The BZT52-B16X has a breakdown voltage of 16V, at which point the diode switches from diode to Zener mode. In the Zener mode, it reduces the reverse voltage and allows current to flow in both directions. The diode then acts as a voltage regulator, maintaining the circuit at a constant voltage.
