The CDCE906PWG4’s working principle is based on the phase-locked loop (PLL) principle. This circuit uses an input reference clock to track and generate one or more accurately timed output clocks. The device compares the phase and/or frequency of the input reference clock with its internal VCO output clock, adjusts and locks the VCO output clock to the frequency of the input reference clock, eventually providing output clocks tracking the frequency and phase of the input reference clock.
The device features a phase-locked loop (PLL) with a fractional-N frequency synthesizer and a VCO library structure. The PLL has a charge pump current of 400 µA and uses a standard single-loop, leading negate architecture. This allows for excellent isolation between the reference oscillator and VCO, as well as an extremely wide loop gain throughout the locked state every time the device is powered up, resulting in faster lock-in and greater dynamic performance.
The PLL synthesizer has an output frequency range from 8 kHz to 3.2 GHz. The synthesizer has on-chip linear and non-linear dividers, as well as programmable dividers allowing for high-speed and low-jitter clock outputs. The frequency multiplication ratio of the synthesizer can be controlled over a wide range. The device also features several post-PLL paths and phase-aligned outputs for convenience.
The CDCE906PWG4 also integrates Clock Data Recovery (CDR) for communication interface applications. It generates transmit clock through a 1:4 standard x4 clock multiplier and source synchronization.
