Optoisolators, also called optocouplers, are components used to couple electrical signals between circuits without direct electrical connection.

The CNY17-1S presents the photovoltaic output optoisolator and is part of a large family of components from Vincotech with distinctive isolation voltages and a wide range of industrial applications.

The CNY17-1S optoisolator is a photovoltaic output optoisolator with an output transistor driven directly by a photosensitive device, such as an Infrared LED or a photo transistor. It provides an electrical insulation barrier between input and output circuits and can be used to isolate high voltage output from low voltage input circuits.

Application Field

The CNY17-1S optoisolator is suitable for a wide range of applications, including industrial motor control, power supplies, AC or DC motor control, multimedia interfaces, digital signal processing, display drivers, microcontroller interfacing, and other signal switching applications.

It also finds application in medical devices, automotive applications, communication lines, and in industrial machinery.

Working Principle

CNY17-1S optoisolator uses the principle of photocurrent to electrically isolate the isolated output, from the isolated input, at the same time providing low-level current transfer and voltage level shifting. It works by using photovoltaic process, or light-induced current transfer, in which photons of light are absorbed by a photodiode and converted into electrons and holes. The resulting electrical charge carriers create a current, which is transferred between two conducting layers of semiconductor material.

The photodiode in the optoisolator provides current transfer between the input and output at very low voltage levels, while the transistor provides higher transfer when the optoisolator is operated at higher voltage levels. The optoisolator’s protection diode ensures that it does not get damaged in case of reverse polarity applied to the input or output pins. The optoisolator has an insulation barrier between its input and output, which enables it to withstand high isolation voltage and prevents cross susceptive transfer of electrical signals.
