The DS1673S-3 is an advanced clock and calendar-based real-time clock that provides high accuracy for a broad range of applications. This highly accurate device offers a wide range of timekeeping functions, including an alarm, a selectable leap year capability, an internal temperature sensor and various ranges of temperature compensation. The device has two configurable outputs, an industry-standard interrupt interface, and programmable alarms.
The DS1673S-3 is part of a family of advanced Real-Time Clocks that utilizes both a quartz crystal and temperature-compensated oscillator (TCO) to provide very high accuracy. The TCO works in conjunction with a temperature sensor mounted on the IC to automatically adjust its frequency to compensate for temperature changes. This provides the device with excellent temperature performance, and it can maintain accuracy to within a tenth of a second per day over a temperature range of 0 to 70 °C.
A key feature of the DS1673S-3 is its on-board integrated crystal oscillator (XO). The XO is a fundamental building block of the Real-Time Clock, providing very accurate and highly consistent frequency for timekeeping and other clock functions. In addition to its highly accurate clock timekeeping, the XO can also generate the system reference clock for microprocessors and other digital devices.
The DS1673S-3 also integrates a number of functions to support the clock timekeeping feature. The device provides an interrupt output pin and programmable alarms, as well as an industry-standard Inter-Integrated Circuit (I2C) interface, which allows it to be easily connected to a system processor or microcontroller. In addition, the device comes with a selectable leap year feature and enables higher accuracy by allowing the addition of seconds to the system timekeeping.
In applications that require very precise timing, the DS1673S-3\'s on-chip Temperature Compensated Oscillator (TCO) can provide the necessary accuracy. The TCO works in conjunction with a temperature sensor mounted on the IC to adjust the oscillator frequency to compensate for temperature changes. This ensures that the device can maintain its accuracy within a few tenths of a second per day over its full operating temperature range.
