DC–DC switching regulators are circuits, both through discrete and integrated circuits, which modulate the input voltage to a lower, or higher, output voltage as needed. This helps save energy, reduce physical size and improve reliability, speed, efficiency, and accuracy. The FAN2306MAMPX is a new interleaved boost converter, integrated circuit (IC) from Diodes Incorporated and is the latest in a series of dedicated switch-mode power controllers for applications requiring high efficiency, high output current, and low standby power.
The FAN2306MAMPX boosts the input voltage between 4.5V and 33V to two output voltages (V1 and V2) with channels independently regulated by two independent feedback pins. Specifically designed for automotive applications, it has an integrated high-side MOSFET, low-side switch, amplifier, and a control PWM (pulse width modulation) circuit. The chip operates using 100% duty cycle with fixed output current. It is ideal for applications requiring a voltage boost and can operate for a broad (25A to 100A) output current range.
Application Field and Working Principle
The FAN2306MAMPX is a two-phase, synchronous interleaved boost converter designed to increase the output voltage of an electrical system. The device is ideal for applications such as solar inverters, variable speed drive systems, industrial servo drives, and other applications that need an increased output voltage, often in harsh operating environments. The device also features an integrated high-side and low-side MOSFET, a control PWM circuit, an amplifier, and several protection circuits.
The FAN2306MAMPX has a push-pull control circuit for each phase and the two-phase interleaving reduces electromagnetic interference and significantly extends the life of inductors. The input voltage range is 4.5V to 33V and the output voltage range is 24V to 40V. Furthermore, the chip has a 100% duty cycle for steady output current, a switching frequency up to 1.5MHz, and a power-saving low power current of 1mA.
When the input voltage is applied to the FAN2306MAMPX, the low-side MOSFET turns on and the inductor current flows through the diode and source. This results in a current ramp up to a limited value, and the load current starts flowing. When the inductor has reached the target current, the high-side MOSFET is turned on, transitioning the mode to the second phase. The energy stored in the inductor is now transferred to the output. Once the current reaches a preset peak current limit, the current is decreased and eventually returns to the zero-crossing point. At this point, the inductor current reaches zero and both the MOSFETs are turned off. The complete cycle is the same for both phases.
The FAN2306MAMPX is an ideal power management IC for applications requiring a voltage boost in harsh operating environments. The device can provide reliable and efficient performance for a range of automotive applications, including applications that require high output current, high efficiency, and low standby power.
