The FAN2559S15X is Special Mode Power Switcher (SMPS) specifically designed for battery powered, space constrained applications. It is a voltage regulator which helps supply power to the portable devices such as cell phone, laptop, and handheld terminals. The ability to operate at temperature range extends up to 125 degree celsius and high level of integration together with a miniature package make it a perfect fit for the applications.

The FAN2559S15X device supports input voltage from 2.7V to 5.5V, thus it is suitable for the rechargeable battery applications. Output voltage can be configured between 0.8V and 3.3V with a maximum output current of 1A. The device also features over current protection (OCP) to protect the system from the current overload cases.

The FAN2559S15X device can be divided into two functional parts, the controller and power MOSFET. The controller comprises of a highly integrated buck converter control block and low voltage buck regulator, each with a separate power path. The power MOSFET contains two N-channel MOSFETs as switching switches. The two MOSFETs are connected in parallel in order to increase the power handling capability of the device.

The operation of FAN2559S15X is based on buck converter control principle. Under the operation, the controller monitors the output voltage, the reference voltage and an adjustable Soft-Start. Based on the current output voltage and the reference voltage, the controller adjusts the switching frequency of the power MOSFET to maintain the output voltage. The device can be enabled and disabled by the logic control signal connected to the EN pin.

FAN2559S15X is widely used in portable applications where the power efficiency, size/volume and operation under high temperature are the concerns. The device is ideal for the portable applications with its wide input voltage range and current monitoring capability.

The FAN2559S15X is easily integrated into a wide range of applications since it can be easily configured. Standard applications where the FAN2559S15X device can be applied include monitoring systems, inexpensive digital instrumentation, audio headphones, and low power LED lighting applications.
