Working Principle

GP10W-E3/54 rectifier single diode works under voltage in a two-electrode configuration. When there is no applied voltage, the junction between the two electrodes is a reverse-bias junction. When the positive voltage is applied to the anode, the electrons in the n-type material are pulled toward the anode and holes in the p-type material are pushed away from the cathode, creating a depletion region of electron-deficient material having a large electric field. This electric field built up between the two electrodes will prevent the current from flowing in the reverse direction, making the device an one-way conductor.

When the forward voltage is applied and the current starts to flow, the layer of electrons and holes is reduced, allowing the current to flow freely in the forward direction, yet making the reverse current blocked. In terms of electrical properties, the forward voltage is usually about 1V for most rectifier single diodes, which has a great advantage in power saving compared with other types of diodes.
