Transient voltage suppressors (TVS) diodes are types of surge protection devices (SPDs) providing an alternative to metal oxide varistors (MOVs) and silicon avalanche diodes (SADs) in the protection of sensitive electronics from destructive voltage surges. The GSOT05C-HE3-08 is an advanced ultrafast, low capacitance, bi-directional TVS diode suitable for combination ESD/Surge protection features. The two main components that form the basis of the GSOT05C-HE3-08 are a Zener diode and a PNPN diode. The PNPN diode functions as a gate/trigger that turns on the current path and the Zener diode allows for the protection of the input circuit from the damaging voltage. When the input rises above the breakdown voltage of the device, the gate trigger turns on the current path allowing current to flow through the Junction in order to limit the input surge. While this current is very high initially, it gradually reduces and the Zener diode dissipates the extra energy to ground. This reduces the input shock to safe levels, protecting the sensitivity of the circuit.
