Working Principle

The GSOT12C-HG3-18 is a product of STMicroelectronics’ SmartDiode family that combines low power loss, low clamping voltage, and fast response time for overvoltage protection in a single device. This diode uses two terminals, an anode and a cathode. The voltage potential applied between the two terminals must follow certain operating guidelines to ensure the correct operation. When no excessive voltage is present, the diode acts like an open circuit. When triggered by an over-voltage, the diode acts like a low-resistance conductive path and absorbs a certain amount of current, depending on its rating.

The GSOT12C-HG3-18 can absorb large over-voltage transients of up to 5A. Its dynamic resistance can be as low as 200mΩ, and its differential capacitance is 4pF at 1MHz, 10V, and 1.1nC at 1GHz, 10V. It also has a very low leakage current of less than 0.001mA to 0.1uA.
