The HIP6004BCR-T is a special purpose voltage regulator from PMIC that is perfect for an array of applications. The device integrates a boost converter, an SCR and a low-side switch controller into a single 8-pin package. The HIP6004BCR-T can also be configured up to three-phase step-down dc-dc converters for multi-phase applications, for which it offers high-efficiency, high-accuracy, low ripple, overvoltage protection and a soft start feature, as well as a wide input voltage range and low-noise operation. This makes the device ideal for applications such as industrial, automotive and consumer electronics.

The working principle behind the HIP6004BCR-T voltage regulator is grounded in the CMOS process and its current path is made up of a power MOSFET and an SCR switch. The device is designed to contain five functional blocks: the start up and power-on-reset circuit, error amplifier, control oscillator, and over-voltage protection circuit. The device uses a PWM style of control to ensure that switching losses are minimized, as well as for precise current regulation.

When the HIP6004BCR-T is powered up, the start-up circuit immediately starts the internal oscillator, as it monitors the input voltage supply. After the input voltage is fixed and stable, the PWM control circuitry takes over and converts the output voltage. The PWM controller continuously tracks the output voltage, comparing it with the internal reference voltage and making corrections in order to keep the output voltage regulated. The error amplifier keeps the output voltage within a given tolerance range by controlling the duty cycle of the power MOSFET and the SCR. The overvoltage protection circuit is designed to protect the device against an excessive output voltage. Whenever the output voltage exceeds the overvoltage threshold, the circuit keeps the SCR switched OFF, thus preventing further damage to the system.

The HIP6004BCR-T provides an adjustable output voltage range of 1.2V to 5.5V, with a maximum output voltage accuracy of ±3%. The maximum output current of the device is 5A. The device also features a low ripple and noise rate of –60dB. The device operates from a wide input voltage range of 3V to 28V and provides a high efficiency rate of up to 97%. The device also provides overvoltage protection, short-circuit protection, thermal protection, and a soft start feature for the loads. The device comes in an 8-pin DFN package and has an operating temperature range between –40°C and 85°C.
