The HIP6521CB-T is one of the most widely used voltage regulators in the power management and integrated circuit (PMIC) market. This voltage regulator can be used in many applications, from industrial to consumer electronics. It is a versatile three-terminal linear regulator, with both a low quiescent current and low dropout voltage, as well as low EMI Ripple and reactive transient voltage characteristics. It has many features, such as a 0.8-volt reference voltage, adjustable current limit, thermal shutdown, and a built-in voltage clamp.

The HIP6521CB-T is a low-power integrated circuit which offers the ideal performance in both linear and switching regulator applications. It offers two distinct output voltage levels, a low voltage of 2.5V, and a higher voltage of 10V. The HIP6521CB-T can regulate output currents up to 200mA, with a maximum peak output current of 500mA.

The linear regulator works by utilizing two terminals to correct the output voltage of the device. The internal circuitry compares the reference voltage from the reference voltage pin with that of the output voltage pin. When the output voltage is lower than the reference voltage, current will flow from the output pin to the reference voltage pin. A Zener diode placed in series between the output and reference pins would limit the current so that the output voltage stays within the limits specified by the regulator.

The switching regulator uses switch mode power supply (SMPS) technology to convert the input voltage from the incoming power source into the output voltage. Using this technology, the switching regulator is able to achieve very high efficiency ratings, by efficiently controlling the flow of current, while the linear regulator is limited by the output value relative to the input. For example, when powering a 2.5V device, a Linear Regulator would be limited to an efficiency of 80%, whereas the switch mode power supply would be able to achieve up to 95%.

The HIP6521CB-T can also be used in a step-up or boost converter application, where higher-power components are needed to reach the desired output voltage. In this case, the output voltage can be adjusted to reach values much higher than the normal 2.5V and 10V limits. This type of application is commonly used in car audio systems, where the voltage output needs to be boosted from 12V to around 18V in order to power high-powered amplifiers.

As a 3-terminal regulator, the HIP6521CB-T utilizes a single output pin and two inputs to regulate the output voltage, meaning less components and less space needed. The voltage output of the device is directly proportional to the reference voltage input, allowing for easy voltage selections depending on the application.
