The HIP6019BEVAL1 is an evaluation board designed for off-line AC/DC and DC/DC SMPS applications. This application field and the working principle behind it can be broken down into several components.

At the heart of such power converters is the topology that defines the circuit architecture. In the case of off-line converters, the most commonly used topology is the flyback type. In this type, power is transferred during discontinuous conduction mode (DCM) by using a primary inductor. The inductor stores the power input during the first half-cycle of the rectified mains voltage and then releases it to the output side during the second half-cycle. Several components are then employed to provide the necessary control to the flyback converter in order to regulate the output voltage.

The basic operation of all SMPS evaluation boards is the same. Power transistors are usually used to connect the input signal to the output in order to regulate the primary current. This primary current is then used to charge or discharge energy stored in the primary inductor. A rectifier is also incorporated into the design in order to rectify the AC input voltage before it is applied to the Flyback converter.

The controlling element of the converter is a Pulse Width Modulated (PWM) controller that is used to provide the necessary high frequency switching of the primary current on the input side. The PWM controller is normally connected to a feedback circuit of the output voltage in order to ensure that it is regulated. The feedback circuit might incorporate a sensing element such as a voltage divider or a current transformer.

The HIP6019BEVAL1 is specifically designed for evaluating off-line SMPS applications. Software tools such as the DC/DC Laboratory Trainer are used in order to analyze the converter performances.
