TVS (Transient Voltage Suppressor) diodes are widely used for the protection of sensitive electronics. The ICTE8C-E3/51 is an industry standard TVS diode designed for high-level peak power and surge current protection. This device is suitable for applications such as AC mains protection, secondary and tertiary protection of on-board equipment, automotive systems protection, and other industrial, commercial and consumer technology protection.

The ICTE8C-E3/51 is an 8-pin dual power diode. It is constructed using a split diode structure, with separate and independent positive and negative polarity power diodes on the same chip. This design allows for higher power handling capabilities and greatly increases the protection area of the device. The ICTE8C-E3/51 has a reverse stand-off voltage of 8V, a maximum surge current of 51A, and a maximum peak power dissipation of 20W.

The working principle for the ICTE8C-E3/51 is based on the fact that it drastically changes its impedance when exposed to a voltage spike. This happens because the relationship between the voltage and current is not linear, unlike a normal diode. When exposed to a voltage spike, the device switches from the low impedance off pull state to the much higher on pull state, forcing the voltage to drop. This action clamps the voltage to a safe level, thus protecting the circuitry from being damaged. The device will remain in the off pull or high impedance state until the voltage spike has finished.

The ICTE8C-E3/51 is useful in a wide variety of applications such as over-voltage, over-current or transient surge protection. It can be used for the protection of systems that have a single-phase AC input and can provide protection against over voltage, over current, and transient surges. This device is also well suited for a range of applications such as power converters, bus protection circuits, and AC line filter circuits. In addition, it can be used for the protection of sensitive microcontroller based applications such as motor control, solar power systems, and industrial and medical equipment.
