ISL6112IRZA belongs to PMIC (Power Management IC) family, being further classified as hot swap controllers. It minimizes the inrush current generated during hot insertion of external cards or boards into the power system. ISL6112IRZA can be used to control the output voltage of AC/DC power adapter and controlling the current flow on boards and cards in power system, systems such as servers, storage arrays, and rack servers which need to operate in the full load condition.

ISL6112IRZA is a dual-channel hot swap controller, each has high-side and low-side N-channel MOSFETs. Each operating MOSFET is a low-side called SRFET and a high-side referred to as DRFET. These low-side MOSFET serve as a sensing element to balance the system current and switch on the high-side MOSFET. The device also features an adjustable current limit and adjustable soft-start time, which maximizes system reliability.

The working principle is sturdily based on the concept of the high-side and low-side MOSFETs. The SRFET is turned on when the power supply is turned on, and the DRFET is turned on when the output current of the power supply exceeds the set limit. When the power supply is turned off, both the SRFET and DRFET are turned off.

ISL6112IRZA can also provide an over-current protection feature by turning on its external N-channel MOSFETs in case of the detected over-current. It has short-circuit protection and over-temperature protection that can be configured according to the user’s application requirements. Further, it has an adjustable current limit and balanced soft-start time.

Users can do remote sensing or local sensing of the output current.
