The hot swap controller integrated circuit (IC) PMIC from Integrated Device Technology (IDT) is designed to support high power, isolated and non-isolated Hot Swap applications with programmable OVP and OVP latching. Hot swap controllers are ICs used to safely power on a card within a system. The hot swap ICs are designed to control power to a board by monitoring for correct power supply sequences, controlling inrush current, and providing supply protection.

The ISL61861CCBZ-T is a Hot Swap Controller with an input voltage rating of 7V to 38V and an output voltage rating of 0.6V to 6V. It features an internal LDO regulator, can operate at up to 8MHz, includes an adjustable current limit and a programmable OVP. Its package size is 5mm x 5mm and it delivers a maximum power rating of 150W.

Application Field

The ISL61861 can be used in a variety of hot swap applications, including those requiring high power applications, such as HOT Chips and Scalable Servers, low power applications, such as NIC and PEG cards, and Enterprise Storage. Working Principle

The ISL61861CCBZ-T Hot Swap Controller works by monitoring the input voltage and current, and then controlling the power conversion through an on-chip switch. The current limit and OVP can be programmed through the use of external resistors. When the current reaches the programmed limit, the on-chip switch will turn off and prevent further power conversion. Likewise, when the voltage reaches the programmed OVP, the on-chip transistor will also turn off and prevent further power conversion. In any case, the IC will turn off the switch whenever the input voltage is below the OVP or when the current reaches the current limit.

The ISL61861CCBZ-T is also designed with an integrated LDO regulator to ensure stable voltage output. The LDO regulator adjusts the output voltage based on the input voltage and the programmed OVP, thereby providing a stable voltage output. In addition, the IC also has an over-temperature protection feature that shuts down the switch when the temperature exceeds a certain threshold.
