ISL61863CIRZ-T Application Field and Working Principle

PMIC (Power Management Integrated Circuit) - Hot Swap Controllers are a class of circuit board components that are designed to reduce the risk of damage to circuit boards by controlling the amount of power that goes into them. The ISL61863CIRZ-T is a 3.3V Hot Swap Controller designed to protect against overcurrent conditions and reverse polarity in applications where extra power is not necessary. The ISL61863CIRZ-T has integrated low on-resistance FETs, robust MOSFET gate drive, undervoltage lockout, overvoltage protection, and thermal shutdown protection. It is ideal for applications such as automotive, industrial, and consumer electronics, as well as server platforms and processors.

The ISL61863CIRZ-T is a two-phase, two-output hot-swap controller IC with integrated overcurrent protection (OCP), reverse-bias protection (RBP), and undervoltage lockout (UVLO) circuitry. The device features a wide operating supply voltage range of 4.5V to 28V and an operating temperature range of –40°C to +105°C. External MOSFETs are required to enable the current limit feature and enable the device enable inputs. This allows the device to jump start an external MOSFET which in turn can control the current flow.

The device also includes an OVP (Overvoltage Protection) and a Thermal Shutdown circuit. The OVP monitor monitors the voltage and shuts down the device when the voltage exceeds the set value. The thermal shutdown circuit senses the die temperature and disables the outputs if the temperature exceeds the set value.

The ISL61863CIRZ-T includes two independent channels that can drive up to two external MOSFETs. Each channel includes an OVP Comparator, a MOSFET Control Logic, and a Current Limit Comparator. The OVP Comparator monitors the supply voltage and sends a signal to the control logic when the voltage exceeds the preset value. The Control Logic then turns off the MOSFETs. The Current Limit Comparator monitors the current and sends a signal to the control logic when the current exceeds the preset value. The control logic then turns off the MOSFETs.

The ISL61863CIRZ-T also features an Undervoltage Lockout (UVLO) that is designed to keep the MOSFETs inaccessible until the input voltage is capable of sustaining a gate voltage. This prevents false on/off states of the MOSFETs due to noisy or low supply voltages. The device also includes an OCP Timer that internally sets the time interval for the output current limit.

The ISL61863CIRZ-T is an ideal solution for applications such as telecom/ datacom systems, base stations, server platforms and processors, industrial, automotive, power converters, and Li-Ion/NiMH battery packs. It is also suitable for use as an I/O switch in multiple point systems, switching power supplies, and medical monitoring systems.
