Working Principle of JAN1N4470C

The JAN1N4470C diode operates on the principle that when current passes across it in one direction, it will produce a stable 5 Volt reference voltage in its other direction. The diode accomplishes this through its built-in Zener diode effect.When a current is applied across the diode in the forward direction, it creates an electric field across the diode junction that causes a free electron current flow. This free electron current is attracted to a layer of positive ions within the semiconductor material. The flow of these free electron currents results in a voltage rise across the semiconductor junction. This voltage rise is called the Zener breakdown voltage or Zener voltage. The Zener voltage is determined by the physical characteristics of the semiconductor material and is typically in the range from 0.5 to 55 Volts.When the forward voltage across the diode is increased to a point higher than the Zener breakdown voltage, the diode creates a reverse direction current flow. This reverse current flow causes the diode to maintain the voltage across its terminal at the Zener breakdown voltage. This voltage remains stable even when the forward voltage applied to the diode varies.In the case of the JAN1N4470C, the Zener breakdown voltage is 5 Volts resulting in 5 Volts being constantly present across the terminals of the diode. This voltage provides a stable reference voltage which can be used in a variety of applications.
