The KSZ8091RNDIA-TR is an integrated 10/100 dual speed physical layer transceiver developed by a well-known semiconductor manufacturer. It combines both types of Ethernet PHY (Physical Layer) transceivers, the 10Base-T and the 100Base-TX into one single chip.

The device is a fully featured Ethernet Transceiver which provides a low power standalone physical layer transceiver interface to the 10Base-T and 100BTX Ethernet Networks and supports full-duplex communication. It requires only one external inductor, four capacitors and a few resistors to form a full featured physically layered device – making it an ideal choice for low data rate applications such as home automation and other Internet of Things products.

Working Principle

The KSZ8091RNDIA-TR is a physical layer transceiver and as such, it combines the functionality of both a physical transceiver and a media access controller. Its main task is to convert signals received on the transceiver interface into the desired format for transmission and vice versa.

The device contains a high-speed DMA transfer engine that is used to generate and receive Ethernet packets from the media access controller. The packets are then sent out over the Ethernet cable through one of the two ports provided by the device. The device also includes Error Checking and Correction (ECC) capability that can detect and correct errors in data transmission. In addition, the device implements the Autonegotiation protocol in order to identify and select the optimal communication mode and link parameters.

In order to reduce power consumption, the device also contains a low-power state enable/disable (LPSTOP) bit. This bit can be programmed to enable or disable the device’s low-power state.
