The L6599AFD is an integrated power supply controller and monitor designed to provide single-channel synchronous buck regulation for notebook computer and server applications. It is capable of providing a regulated 5V and up to 10A of continuous output current. The L6599AFD integrates two main functions; firstly, to monitor and regulate the output voltage, adjusting the power supply in order to meet the load requirements, and secondly, to provide protection against over-voltage, under-voltage, over-current, and over-temperature conditions.
The control loop of the L6599AFD is based on an analog-to-digital converter (ADC). It measures the output voltage through an external Sense circuit and compares it to an internal reference voltage. Based on this comparison, the output voltage is adjusted by adjusting the pulse width modulation (PWM) duty cycle of the power switch. By continuously monitoring and adjusting the output voltage, the L6599AFD is able to regulate the output voltage within the operating range between 4.5V and 5.5V.
The device is also equipped with several features for protection against over-current, over-voltage, under-voltage and over-temperature conditions. In order to protect against over-current conditions, the L6599AFD uses integral cycle-by-cycle current detection and slew rate control. Additionally, it features over-voltage and under-voltage protection, as well as over-temperature protection. When the device detects an over-current condition, it shuts down the system to prevent damage.
