LAN8187I-JT is a type of interface drivers, receivers, and transceiver. As a single chip physical layer devices, it provides a reliable high-speed connection between a host device and a physical medium such as twisted pair and coaxial cable by using a standardized High-Speed Serial Interface (HSI) protocol. Moreover, it is a highly integrated, low-power and cost-efficient solution for networking system designers, suitable for a wide range of applications such as Automation, PLCs, HVAC, Industrial and Home Automation, But also any system which requires an ethernet communication interface.
The LAN8187I-JT is designed to combine several basic networking components into single chip. It consists of a twisted pair/coaxial transceiver, a physical coding and decoding (PCD) module, a media access controller (MAC) and receive/transmit control logic. The PCD and MAC are backboned by the rest of module in order to large framing, routing, and switching functions. The chip simplifies the network integration process, as it eliminates the need to have separate components for physical layer and packet processing.
As a physical layer device, the chip supports both 100base-T and 10base-T Ethernet communication standards. The chip provides a maximum data rate of up to 100Mbps. Moreover, it supports up to 32 simultaneous users, making the chip suitable for small-to medium-sized business networks. The chip is compliant with the 802.3z and IEEE 802.3ax standards. Furthermore, it supports Auto-MDIX, allowing it to automatically detect and switch between TX and RX ports.
The LAN8187I-JT also provides basic Automotive Diagnostic Bus (ADB) support, allowing diagnostic requests and responses to be transmitted via its ports. In addition, the chip also supports HDCP compliant connection protocols, allowing its ports to be used in HDCP compliant devices such as ultra-high-definition TVs and projectors. The chip also supports diverse power saving features such as spread-spectrum clocking and power-down mode.
The working principle of the LAN8187I-JT is very similar to other networking components. It reads data sent from its PCD module and sends the data to its connected MAC module. The MAC module then processes the data, encapsulates the data frames in Ethernet frames according to various protocol specified, and sends them to the transceiver module to be transmitted over the physical medium. The sent data frames are then received by the transceiver module and are decoded according to the same protocol. The received frames are then sent to the MAC module for further processing. The MAC module also performs frame checks and retransmissions.
Generally, the LAN8187I-JT is a low-power, cost-efficient solution for networking system designers. It provides reliable Ethernet communication and high data rate, eliminating the need for a complicated set of networking components. As a single chip integration, it greatly simplifies the network integration process.
