Modern power management systems are becoming increasingly complex, with tighter energy-efficiency requirements, higher operating frequencies and faster transient responses. LDO (Low Dropout) regulators are no longer sufficient to satisfy the increasing demands on performance and energy efficiency, and so switch mode power supply regulators (SMPS) have become essential in modern power regulation. The LM2574HVM-5.0/NOPB is a monolithic integrated circuit designed for high-performance, cost-effective, step-down switching voltage regulator applications. It features a high performance regulator topology, which combines the advantages of low component count, compact solution size, low noise and low ripple with minimum external component count.
The LM2574HVM-5.0/NOPB is a synchronous step-down switching regulator with a 5V fixed output voltage. It is capable of delivering 1A of continuous output current, making it well suited for a variety of portable and handheld applications such as cell phones, PDAs, digital cameras and MP3 players, where superior noise and transient response, small solution size and low cost are essential. Originally designed as an automotive grade product, the LM2574HVM-5.0/NOPB is also suitable for a variety of non-automotive applications.
The LM2574HVM-5.0/NOPB uses an internal P and N channel MOSFET of low RDS(ON) resistance, which enables it to operate at frequencies up to 1.2MHz. This helps to reduce the size of the inductor and capacitor components required to achieve a given output voltage and load current, allowing for a much more efficient and compact power solution. The device also features bipolar current sources with adjustable soft-start and over-current limiting. This ensures that the application does not suffer from excess power dissipation or excessive in-rush current at start-up, leading to improved reliability and operational lifetime.
To control the output voltage, the LM2574HVM-5.0/NOPB uses a constant frequency, current-mode control topology and voltage feedback architecture. This provides superior line and load transient response, as well as excellent ±1.25% output voltage accuracy. With its minimum required input voltage of 4.5V and its low power consumption of 6.1mW (no load), the LM2574HVM-5.0/NOPB is well suited for a variety of handheld applications and other high-efficiency voltage regulation applications.
Unlike other voltage regulators, the LM2574HVM-5.0/NOPB can be enabled or disabled through an external or internal control signal. This allows the user to control the output voltage of the regulator, allowing a greater degree of versatility when it comes to code-controlled power management and energy savings. The device also features thermal and UVLO protection to ensure that an over-temperature or under-voltage event does not put the system in danger of damage.
