LM2940IMPX-10 – Application Field and Working Principle

LM2940IMPX-10 is a linear voltage regulator from LM series of Texas Instruments that find various applications in power line monitoring and post regulation. Working Principle

The two transistors present in the IC are arranged in series, which are the Difference Amplifier (DA) and the Power Amplifier (PA) stages along with a Voltage Reference Source (VREF). During normal operation, the voltage supplied to the non-inverting input of the DA is compared to the VREF and it triggers the charge pump and current amplifier when the voltage at the non-inverting input falls below VREF. In addition to regulating the voltage, the LM2940IMPX-10 is capable of doubling the output voltage by passing the current through a high-value resistor.
