LM2940IMPX-10 is a linear voltage regulator from LM series of Texas Instruments that find various applications in power line monitoring and post regulation. The LM2940IMPX-10 Voltage Regulator is an integrated circuit containing three terminal and two transistors, enabling the user to regulate the voltage and current of a power supply. Generally, it is operated with a range of input voltage and current. The voltage regulator further ensures that within the specified range and accuracy, the output voltage remains constant even when the input voltage or current fluctuates. The two transistors present in the IC are arranged in series, which are the Difference Amplifier (DA) and the Power Amplifier (PA) stages along with a Voltage Reference Source (VREF). During normal operation, the voltage supplied to the non-inverting input of the DA is compared to the VREF and it triggers the charge pump and current amplifier when the voltage at the non-inverting input falls below VREF. This comparator controls the voltage output with the built-in charge pump to provide the necessary drain current to the PA. The Power Amplifier stage amplifies the current to the maximum level needed for output gain, to the point when enough current reaches the output stage, providing the desired output voltage. This process is repeated and regulated, so that the output voltage remains unchanged even when the input voltage or current changes. In addition to regulating the voltage, the LM2940IMPX-10 is capable of doubling the output voltage by passing the current through a high-value resistor. This makes it possible to drive high-power loads such as relay coils, motors, and transformers. The LM2940IMPX-10 Voltage Regulator also has built-in current and thermal protection, which prevents overcurrent and over-temperature conditions.
