LM361N/NOPB is a common used integrated circuit that primarily functions as a comparator. Comparators are found in linear systems and often used to “compare” two input voltages, then returning an independent output voltage based upon the comparison. The LM361N/NOPB, along with other comparator integrated circuits, have found wide application in many industries and technologies, as they provide an excellent design platform in which circuit designers can quickly and easily construct precise voltage comparison systems with minimal components and setup. The LM361N/NOPB is a dual-input comparator, meaning it has two-input pins. These pins are labeled Inverting and Non-Inverting, and they both measure the same voltage, but subtracted from each other. The inverted pin voltage is then compared to the non-inverted pin voltage, and any differences are returned via the output pin. This simple yet effective design creates a multitude of voltage comparison functions that can be used in a variety of linear systems.In addition to the two input pins, the LM361N/NOPB has a few additional pins for various other features like power and control. The power pin is labeled VCC, and the output control pin is labeled Out Enable. When the Out Enable pin is a logical “High”, the output is enabled and can be used for comparison operations. When the Out Enable pin is a logical “Low”, the output is disabled and no comparison operations can be performed.The LM361N/NOPB is also one of the few comparator integrated circuits with a built-in latch feature. This latch feature provides the ability to enable/disable the output after a comparator operation has been performed, thus preventing unwanted outputs from being generated. This is especially useful on systems that operate in a high-speed environment, as the comparator and latch will only operate when needed and then quickly release the output when it is no longer needed.In addition to its many features, the LM361N/NOPB integrates several safety and fail-safe techniques that you won’t find in other comparator integrated circuits. This includes a thermal protection circuit that protects the integrated circuit from overheating and damaging the other components, as well as a wide power supply voltage range from 3V to 30V.Taken together, the LM361N/NOPB comparator integrated circuit provides a powerful and reliable platform for engineers that need precision voltage comparison operations in linear systems.
