The LM5017EVAL/NOPB is a hybrid off-line flyback controller integrated circuit (IC) evaluation board, which features an internal high side power switch and a low side synchronous rectifier providing a high efficiency, low component count solution for isolated DC/DC and AC/DC applications. This evaluation board is a versatile power supply platform for generating powerful supplies from a wide range of inputs.

The LM5017EVAL/NOPB hybrid flyback controller comes with an integrated 1 A high side switch, 300 mA synchronous rectifier and 15 A cold cathode FET for improved switching performance. This platform is ideal for generating 5V/12V or any voltage output from 24V, 48V or 12V DC input sources or AC mains at up to 85-265V AC/47-63 Hz. It allows the substitution of an offline system with added features such as optimized dead time, accurate voltage regulation, regulated current mode control and fast transient response.

Another major benefit of the LM5017EVAL/NOPB is its high-performance switching characteristics, which provide reduced losses and improved efficiency. The internal MOSFET enables high peak current and average current regulation with smooth and clean transitions. The synchronous rectifier also offers improved efficiency when compared to other rectification methods such as diode rectification. This platform is capable of achieving efficiencies greater than 80%, which can reduce the size and number of components needed, making the board ideal for applications where space and power consumption are critical.

The LM5017EVAL/NOPB operating principle is based on a simple Flyback topology. It utilizes the high and low side MOSFETs to regulate the output voltage. The switching cycle is triggered by the internal startup circuit. When the power supply is on, the high side MOSFET is active and the current, from the input voltage, is converted to flyback voltage with the help of the transformer. The stored energy in the transformer is then rectified and filtered to output the desired voltage.
