Working Principle
The LM5001SDE/NOPB uses a fixed-frequency current-mode control method. This allows for fast line and load-transient response, low cycle-by-cycle current ripple and programmable frequency.
The regulator employs a constant frequency, peak current and valley current mode operation that results in a constant frequency output, small steady-state output ripple and small loads step response. In order to achieve this, the LM5001SDE/NOPB uses an on-board oscillator to determine the switching frequency and slope compensation to increase the feedback loop response time.
The on-board MOSFET gate driver is responsible for driving the N-channel power MOSFETs. It is designed to operate at a higher frequency than the input voltage, so that the output voltage is regulated in constant frequency mode over a wide range of input voltage and load.
The LM5001SDE/NOPB is equipped with a low-side FET current-limit and a high-side FET over-voltage protection with clamp diodes and zener diodes. An over-temperature shutdown circuit is also included.
The DC-to-DC regulator features adjustable output voltage and maximum current limit. It can be programmed through an external voltage divider, or through the internal resistor network. The feedback loop can be synchronized externally and the internal or external clock can be used to program the switching frequency and the soft start time.
