The LM5072EVAL/NOPB evaluation board is one of the many evaluation boards in the DC/DC & AC/DC (Off-Line) SMPS classification. The purpose of an evaluation board is to serve as a tool for engineers to test and evaluate the performance of a component and to demonstrate the use of a component in an application. The LM5072EVAL/NOPB evaluation board is no different, as it is designed to demonstrate the LM5072 wide-VIN synchronous buck controller and to enable engineers to experimentally evaluate its performance.

The LM5072 is a synchronous buck controller that operates from an input voltage of 4.5V to 60V, making it ideal for applications with wide input sources. The LM5072 offers users a unique set of features, such as a wide range of selectable pulse-width modulation (PWM) frequencies, spread spectrum modulation, programmable cycle-by-cycle current limit, fault protection circuits, as well as the ability to synchronize to an external clock. These unique features provide the necessary level of flexibility to enable the construction of compact, efficient DC/DC converters.

The LM5072EVAL/NOPB evaluation board is used to demonstrate the LM5072’s capabilities in a synchronous buck converter. The board has two input connections, labeled VIN and GND, which are provided to connect to a wide input voltage source. The board’s output pathways can be found on the VOUT pins. The board also features two settings for a programmable current limit; pin 13 (P_ISNS1) can be set to either 1mΩ or 0.3mΩ, while pin 18 (P_ISNS2) can be set to either 2.2mΩ or 0.8mΩ. The board also provides a feedback path from the output of the converter to the LM5072’s input. This feedback path can be used to adjust the output voltage of the converter.

The LM5072EVAL/NOPB evaluation board also features the ability to enable spread spectrum modulation, enforce cycle-by-cycle current limiting, detect faults, and synchronize to an external clock, all of which are essential features for the proper operation of a DC/DC converter. The board also provides two LEDs, labeled LD1 and LD2, which indicate the operational status of the converter.
