The LM5025AEVAL/NOPB is an evaluation board for use with Texas Instruments’ LM5025A flyback controller. This board is designed to provide a platform for performance evaluation and reference design for offline flyback power supplies operating in either discontinuous or continuous conduction mode.

The LM5025A is designed to bring all the features of a conventional offline flyback converter operating within the power range of 1 W to 8 W. In addition, its integrated features help reduce component count, board space, and external components, while maintaining high performance levels.

Working Principle:

The LM5025A operates in both discontinuous and continuous conduction modes. In the discontinuous mode, the current flowing through the primary of the transformer never goes to zero before beginning a new cycle. In the continuous conduction mode, the current flowing through the primary of the transformer is always continuous, and no current is drawn from the bias winding of the transformer. The switch current is accurately maintained by monitoring the voltage across the current sense resistor and setting it equal to the current programming voltage, I_SENSEI.

The LM5025A provides critical protections including voltage hiccup mode, external temperature sensing, under-voltage lockout, and dynamic over-voltage protection. It also has adjustable switching frequency. The oscillator starts when the IC gets the desired voltage and activates the shutdown input. The frequency is then adjusted to the desired switching frequency through the PLL.

The high-accuracy current limit with an adjustable current level is also included, and is achieved by sensing the voltage and current at the drain of the power switch. Automatic self-restart is available to restart the system after any of the protection events. The flyback transformer must meet the V_SENSEI, I_SENSEI, TCR, and F_osc requirements to be used in the LM5025AEVAL/NOPB.

In addition, the evaluation board allows to adjust the output voltage and the soft-start times. With these features the evaluation board allows flexibility for easy testing and evaluation of the power converter designs.
