The LM5085MMX/NOPB is a monolithic integrated circuit device from Texas Instruments that is part of their Switching Controllers family. It is a peak current mode controller that integrates the primary control functions required for Buck, Boost, Cuk, and Fly-back switching power supplies. It is designed to operate from a single +3.3V to +18V power supply and combines the functions of power supply regulation, overload protection, foldback protection, RT signals, quiescent current feedback control and current limit. The LM5085MMX/NOPB is capable of up to 3 MHz frequency of operation and can be used in the simplest implementations of dc/dc converters, eliminating the need for complex single-ended topology designs.
The primary function of the LM5085MMX/NOPB is to control the average current through a power MOSFET switch which is connected between the input and output of the dc/dc converter. The LM5085MMX/NOPB utilizes a Peak Current Mode Control (PCMC) architecture to achieve accurate output regulation. This architecture relies on the sensing of the current waveform of the switching MOSFET to control the on/off switching of the power MOSFET switch.
The LM5085MMX/NOPB provides two internal channels of Foldback Protection which monitor the input voltage and the output current. The input voltage foldback feature reduces the output current at low input voltages to allow the device to operate within its maximum current rating. The output current foldback feature reduces the output voltage at high output current to protect the power MOSFET switch and to limit the heat dissipation in the power supply.
The LM5085MMX/NOPB also integrates an RT (Resistive-Type) signal generator which is used to adjust the duty-cycle of the switching MOSFET. The RT signal is a digital pulse that includes an on-time and off-time for the switching MOSFET. The on-time and off-time adjust the duty-cycle to regulate the output voltage of the dc/dc converter. The LM5085MMX/NOPB is optimized for use with internal voltage sources and low current loop stability.
The LM5085MMX/NOPB also provides a quiescent current loop feedback control which is used to ensure the converter is operating within its maximum current and power ratings. The quiescent current of the LM5085MMX/NOPB is adjustable. This feature allows the user to select the best compromise between efficiency and operating frequency of the converter. The device also contains a current limit which sets a maximum output current that the device can drive.
The LM5085MMX/NOPB is designed for applications requiring small solution size, high efficiency and integration of features which allow for a simplified design. The device is optimized for applications requiring wide input range, high dimming ratio, and low quiescent current.
Applications of the LM5085MMX/NOPB include any applications that require a buck, boost, cuk or fly-back dc/dc converter such as LED lighting, AC/DC converters, server power, gaming power solutions, telecom/networking, automotive accessories, and consumer electronics.The device has a wide operating temperature range from -40C to +105C.
