Introduction

The LM5066IPMHE/NOPB is a highly integrated hot swap controller designed to facilitate insertion of power supplies into live power busses. The device offers many protections for both the power supply and those already on the bus, as well as robust diagnostics including over-current, temperature, and over-voltage fault protection. By automatically turning on a power supply when necessary and safely providing current inrush protection, this hot swap controller saves development time, component cost, and board space.

PMIC - Hot Swap Controllers

The LM5066IPMHE/NOPB hot swap controller is a member of the LM5066 IPM family of products, which includes the LM5066 hot swap controller and the LM5065 IPM integrated power supply controller. It features an adjustable falling-edge current limit, an adjustable over-voltage warning threshold and a thermally efficient power stage. In addition, it includes overcurrent, over-temperature, and overtemperature protection. All these protections are fully programmable and individually configurable.The LM5066IPMHE/NOPB hot swap controller utilizes a series-pass topology and allows a continuous monitoring of the output voltage on the supply line for over-current, over-voltage, and over-temperature conditions. The overcurrent condition can be determined by measuring the current across the sense resistor. In case of an over-current or over-voltage event, the device immediately shuts down the output voltage, thus protecting the connected equipment and the power supply.The over-temperature protection is enabled by an on-chip temperature sensor. In case of an over-temperature event, the output voltage is shut down. With these protections, the LM5066IPMHE/NOPB protects the connected equipment and the power supply from potential damages.The potentiometer setting on the LM5066IPMHE/NOPB allows the user to adjust the current limit and over-voltage warning threshold level. It also allows the user to adjust the programmable over-temperature protection level.
