By employing an active regulation mode, it is able to regulate the output voltage over a broad range of load conditions and input voltages. Its topology also consists of two low-side power MOSFETs placed in a bridge configuration, so that when the first MOSFET is enabled, the second is disabled, keeping the input and output voltages separated. The controller can be configured to enhance efficiency by utilizing pulse-width-modulation (PWM) and/or pulse-frequency-modulation (PFM) to regulate the output voltage.

The LM5121MH/NOPB takes advantage of a fast-transition and low EMI frequency of operation to maintain stability across its entire dynamic input/output operation range and output load changes. It uses a current(peak)-mode control and adaptive-on-time control with an adjustable off-time, allowing it to achieve a high efficiency over a wide range of input/output conditions. The controller uses a multiphase-burst mode to reduce output ripple to a minimum. It also supports a hysteretic-mode circuit-protection scheme that operates with a built-in voltage or current limit threshold that protects the device from overpower conditions.

The controller has protection against under/over-voltage faults, shorted-load faults, over-temperature protection, as well as selectable over-current protection. It is able to provide an adjustable current-limit threshold which can be set higher, to reduce MOSFET power dissipation associated with current-limit protection. The device also features protection features against accuracy errors, resulting in reliable, cost-effective design and improved performance over traditional control methods.
