Introduction

The LM5100BMA/NOPB is a peak current controller with an integrated Gate Driver, suitable for switching power applications such as Server-on-Chip (SoC) solutions, and can be classified into the power management integrated circuit (PMIC) - Gate Driver group. The LM5100BMA/NOPB can be used in a wide range of applications, such as automotive, industrial, white goods, energy management and solid-state lighting, to provide a high-performance, cost-effective switching solution. This application field was created to enable customers to experience the benefit of single-stage power conversion solutions.

Application Field and Working Principle

The most frequent use of the LM5100BMA/NOPB is in switched mode power supplies, where it can be used for driving high power switching devices, such as MOSFET, IGBT, and thyristors. This device, with its low charge and easy layout, can help save design space and minimize bill of material (BOM) cost The LM5100BMA/NOPB provides a direct connection between its digital output pins and the gate capacitance of the switching device. This results in the direct control of turn-on and turn-off switching devices with a minimum of electromagnetic noise. When using the package, the output voltage can be close to or the same as the turn-on/off voltage of the switching device. This eliminates the need for additional gain or level-shifting components, which reduces component count and cost. The frequency response of the LM5100BMA/NOPB is generally above 500kHz. With a transition time of less than 20ns between the outputs, it is possible to drive multiple channels with separate and independent transition times. The transition times include turn-on and turn-off of both the high side and low side of the switch. The voltage input range of the LM5100BMA/NOPB is programmed by an expression of: Vstart = (Vin + Vshutdown - Vdrive). The maximum range of Vdrive is 0.2 V to 3.3V. Within this range, the output level for high and low can be chosen by selecting suitable values for Vin and Vshutdown. The input sensitivity of the LM5100BMA/NOPB is 0.5V to 2V. This means that low voltage input signals can be used to control the output. The LM5100BMA/NOPB offers a wide operating temperature range of -40 to +125 ̊C. Additionally, the LM5100BMA/NOPB provides maximum sink and source currents of 2.5A and 0.8A respectively. It also provides a thermal shutdown feature with a temperature of 150 ̊C, and circuit protection against open or short circuits as well as current limiting protections.A quick startup enables the device to start automatically when the power is on. The driver monitors the current load to manage short-circuit and over-current events. It can also be used in resonant and soft switching applications. In order to regulate the output voltage, the LM5100BMA/NOPB can be used with either a self-oscillating (hysteretic) or pulse-width modulation (PWM) approach. It can be applied in synchronous buck or boost converters, or in resonant or soft-switching applications.In summary, the LM5100BMA/NOPB is an efficient, cost-effective, and easy-to-use peak current controller and integrated Gate Driver solution for multiple applications including automotive, industrial, white goods, power management, and solid-state lighting.
